There is an infinite ocean of life possibilities that surrounds us all the time. We can be an astronaut or a zookeeper, a prince or a pauper. We can experience debilitating disease or spontaneous remission. We can be blissfully married to our soul mate for decades or struggle with heartache from dysfunctional relationships. We can eat anything we want and have a fabulous body or gain weight practically by looking at a picture of salad.
Why, then, if we are truly limitless beings living in a vast universe, do we keep creating the same scenarios over and over again in our lives? The same types of jobs, the same relationships, the same bosses, the same health or financial issues. The answer is simple, really: it’s all in our head. Literally. We’re in a loop of thought patterns and visions of ourselves based on habits and emotional addictions that keep us stuck in the realm of the familiar. Our thoughts affect our outer conditions. Our internal visions of ourselves affect what we see in our lives.
Don’t really believe that the mind can have a powerful, profound affect on our thoughts and emotions? Consider this. It’s a beautiful day and you’re outside enjoying a hike with your dog. You’re doing something healthy for yourself. The sun is beaming down on you, and you think about how great you feel—at peace, happy, and connected with nature. Feeling the grass beneath your feet, you bounce along and smile as a butterfly flits by. Life is good. Suddenly, you see a snake on the trail just ahead a bit. You become anxious, your heart palpitates so hard it seems it might burst out of your chest, you break out in a sweat. Just then, your dog bounds ahead and playfully picks it up…but, it’s not a snake. It’s only a stick.
What happened? What occurred in your biochemistry? Nothing in the external world changed. All the changes that took place were internal. The mind went into fear overdrive, which resulted in the physical experience of a fluttering heart and clammy body. The same thing happens when we relive painful memories or anticipate painful outcomes. We can be sitting in our living room, in a perfectly calm external world when the maelstrom starts swirling within and, suddenly, we find ourselves bursting into tears.
Such is the power of the mind.
